Importing data
vBook supports the following file formats:
- BASIC (.bas) - Used by Microsoft BASIC.
- CSV (.csv or .txt) - text encoded as Comma separated values, used in most spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel or by most database management systems.
- DBF dBase III and IV (.dbf) - dBase II format is not supported. This format allows you to keep fields labels.
- DIF (.dif) - used in most spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel. This format allows you to keep fields labels.
- FileMaker Pro (.fp7) - This format allows you to keep fields labels.
- WK1/WKS Lotus 1-2-3 (.wk1 or .wks) - Used with Lotus 1-2-3 and other spreadhseets.
- Merge (.mer) - Export format recommended to create sample letters in a text editor. This format allows you to keep fields labels.
- SYLK (.slk) - Used in most spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel.
- Tab Separated Value (.tab or .txt) - Used with most applications. If you do not know which format to use, start by trying it.
- XML (.xml) - Apart XML files, you can import the XML data from an HTTP request.
Importing a file
Address Book and Works modules only are able to receive imported data.
- Choose File > Import Records... from the menu bar.
- Select the intended module to receive tha data.
- Select File in Import Format:.
- Field Mapping dialog box shows in two columns source and target fields. The target fields are the vBook module fields that should receive the data.
- Map vBook module fields to their corresponding source file fields.
- Click Import.
Importing a folder of files
You can also import a folder of files in a single operation:
- Go to File > Import Records... on the menu bar.
- Set Module Name: to Works.
- Set Import Format: to Folder (Works Only).
- In the Folder Location area, click Specify, and choose the folder that contains the files you want to import.
- Check Import only a reference to each picture file if needed (see chapter Preparing images), and click Continue.
- In the Field Mapping dialog box (see image below), place Image and Image_1 face to face.
- Click Import. Each image file will be placed in a new record.

Importing from vBook 1 database
- Launch vBook 1 and check its version number by choosing Help -> About vBook... (Windows) or vBook -> About vBook... (Mac Os) from the menu bar.
- If the version number is lower than 1.1.9, download and install the last update:
- Download vBook 1.1.9 (Update) for Windows.
- Download vBook 1.2.0 (Update) for Macintosh.
- Launch vBook 1, go to Actions -> Sauvegarder et importer -> Sauvegarder les enregistrements and click OK. You can quit vBook after the end of the backup operation.
- Launch vBook 2.
- Choose File -> Import Records... from the vBook 2 menu bar.
- In the next dialog box, select All Modules from the popup menu Module Name: and vBook 1 - Version 1.1.9 and 1.2.0 (All Modules) from Source:.
- Click OK.
- In the next dialog box click Continue.
- Choose the vBook 1 folder on your computer. It is probably located in C:/Program Files/ (Windows) or Macintosh HD/Applications/ (Mac Os). If you use Windows Vista as operating system, see the Troubleshootings chapter.
- After choosing the vBook folder, click the Select button.
- vBook will start importing your old data. Wait for finishing of this operation and check if your data is properly imported.
Importing from vBook 2 backed up database
- Choose File -> Import Records... from the menu bar.
- In the next dialog box, select All Modules from the popup menu Module Name: and vBook 1 - Version 1.1.9 and 1.2.0 (All Modules) from Source:.
- Click OK.
- In the next dialog box click Continue and wait for finishing of the operation.
